Becoming a freemason does incur some costs. There is a registration fee that has to be paid to United Grand Lodge of England, although this is a one off cost, at present £115. Belonging to the Lodge has an annual membership fee, currently £120. Both of these fees have to be paid before your first meeting and depending on which month you join the annual fee may be reduced.
We are a dining Lodge and our dress code is Dinner Jacket, white shirt, black bow tie, white gloves and the current cost of our festive board (3 course meal) is £10. Although it is not compulsory to dine we do like to see as many members as possible at the festive board.
Also there is the regalia, although this only becomes necessary when you become a Master Mason, consisting of an apron that costs between £20 and £40 depending on where you buy from.
Read MoreSt John's Lodge usually meet on the first Monday of the month, unless it is a Bank Holiday when we usually meet the following day. Our meetings start at 6:30pm and by the time we have finished the festive board it is around 10pm, although some members do stay on for a drink or two.

At St John's Lodge we have valued the input from our members, especially the newer brethren, to ensure that Freemasonry is meeting their expectations. One thing that was agreed by almost everyone is that family and friends need to be involved now and then. This is why we hold regular social events and a summer competition with a barbecue to finish.
